Story Snack ~ Spring is for Strawberries

The classes will connect kids to books, food, garden and language and literacy. A story will be shared and read in each Story Snack class and kids will recreate a dish from the story or create one inspired by it.

Age: 3 – 10 years

Price: $500/kid (with 1 adult +$40)

Class Details:

~ Story time: Spring is for Strawberries

~ Make a Strawberry and Spinach Pasta Salad (also make your own salad dressing)

~ Learn about eating fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers

About the story: When a farm family brings their spring crops to a city farmers market, the farmer’s daughter befriends the daughter of a neighborhood family doing their weekly shopping. Over the course of a year, the girls explore the bounty of each season. Sweet spring strawberries and crisp, fresh greens make way for corn on the cob, peppers, and a rainbow of tomatoes. Fall brings pumpkin patches and the crunch of apples. The friends part at the final winter market, already looking forward to the sweet red strawberries that will unite them again next spring.

About the story: Michael Rosen’s free verse poem – Chocolate Cake – was brought to life as a book with fantastic illustrations by Kevin Waldron. Let’s make lots of silly noises together ~ Gobble! Mmmmmmm! Chooka chooka chooka…And what sounds do you make when you eat a chocolate cake? We may also have a chance to listen to Michael Rosen performing his own poem! Just in case your kid wants to know, a free verse poem has no set rhyme. Instead, it follows the natural rhythms of speech.

About the dish: Bake a rich Chocolate Cake (4 inches) and learn to pipe cream on top.
